Athens: Where Myth and Modernity Collide

3 min readSep 21, 2024

Athens — a city where time stands still, yet everything pulses with life. It’s here that my journey as a techno nomad begins, a place where ancient history intertwines with modern chaos, and where every corner seems to whisper stories of the past. I spent a week in this vibrant city, absorbing its energy and allowing it to shape the beats of my first track Upon arriving, I was immediately drawn to the Acropolis, the iconic heart of Athens. Standing beneath the towering Parthenon, I could feel the weight of history, the echoes of ancient civilizations in the air. The Acropolis, perched high above the city, offered a panoramic view of Athens, a sprawling metropolis that felt eternal. Each stone seemed to hum with energy, and I could already sense the beginnings of a deep, resonant bassline forming in my mind. The contrast between the sacred ruins and the bustling city below gave me the idea for the track’s foundation — slow, powerful beats that rise and fall like the ancient columns around me.

But my exploration didn’t end there. I ventured to Pnyx Hill, a site where the seeds of democracy were sown. Standing where Athenian citizens once gathered to debate and decide the future of their city, I felt the collective power of history. The energy here was quieter, but no less potent — like a steady, rhythmic pulse beneath the surface. This inspired the more subtle, driving melodies in the track, layers that build tension and momentum as they progress.

Athens, however, isn’t just a city of the past. Its modern side is equally captivating, and nowhere was that more apparent than in the anarchic neighborhood of Exarchia. This part of the city is raw, rebellious, and alive with creative energy. Graffiti-covered walls, political posters, and street art filled the streets, while the hum of life and resistance was palpable. The urban chaos here felt like an assault on the senses — in the best way possible. It was this part of Athens that brought a gritty, industrial edge to the track, a distorted synth that mirrors the frenetic energy of the city’s underground.

As I continued to explore, I sought balance in quieter, more spiritual places. The Temple of Hephaistos, nestled in the ancient Agora, offered a peaceful respite. Here, among the columns of the temple, I found the space to breathe, to reflect, and to listen to the quieter tones of the city. This serenity inspired the atmospheric breaks in the track, moments of pause between the intensity, allowing the listener to absorb the depth of the soundscape.

Evenings were spent along the coast of Palaio Faliro, where the waves gently lapped against the shore. The calming rhythm of the sea gave the track its final touch — a hypnotic groove that carries the listener forward, like the endless ebb and flow of the ocean. This final element tied everything together, a reminder that even in the midst of chaos, there is peace.

After a week in Athens, I had completed my first track — an aural reflection of the city’s soul. It’s a blend of ancient and modern, of chaotic energy and quiet reflection, much like Athens itself. This journey through history, rebellion, and tranquility has set the tone for what’s to come. Athens, with all its layers and contrasts, gave me the foundation for a sound that’s deeply rooted in place, yet entirely my own.

As I prepare for my next stop — Berlin — I carry with me the lessons and sounds of Athens. This city has shown me how to balance history and modernity, chaos and calm, and weave them into a track that captures the spirit of a place. Stay tuned for the next chapter in this sonic journey as I dive into the heart of techno in Berlin.
